Review: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

25203675“Fate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you’re only seventeen?

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire…

But Akaran has its own secrets—thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most…including herself.”

Update: IT’S HERE! Empire of Storms and Throne of Glass Kindle Deal

As many of you are already aware, Empire of Storms was officially released today in the US! I pre-ordered my copy a few weeks back and I was so pleased to see it on my doorstep when I came home from work today. This book is my most anticipated release of the year and I can’t wait to get started (although I have to finish A Torch Against the Night first 🙂 ).

If you haven’t given the Throne of Glass series a try, I highly recommend picking it up. I know some readers weren’t as enthusiastic about the first two books in the series, but it does pick up as the story goes on. It has been such a pleasurable reading experience watching Celaena, Dorian, Chaol, Manon + everyone else grow into mature, complex characters. If you are even considering picking it up, the ebook of Throne of Glass is currently on Amazon for $2.99!

If you are also excited about this release, happy reading! I hope we all enjoy it as much as the rest of the series 🙂

Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

516kgqh6dml-_sx354_bo1204203200_Image and synopsis from Amazon:

“Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”; she speaks many languages–not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When one of the strangers–beautiful, haunted Akiva–fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child!

I know I am not alone when I say that I love Harry Potter. These books are 100% why I love reading and they are all truly magical. I read the first one in 4th grade and the books and movies carried me throughout college. While nothing can compare to Harry’s story, I was very excited to return to this magical world! I actually finished the book earlier this week, but I will hold my review until the end of the month. For now, we will be discussing all things Harry Potter.

Here is the discussion topic for this week:

If you could choose 3 magical items from any Harry Potter book, which would you choose and why? Explain what you would do with them and how you would use them to your advantage.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Here is my teaser from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. It is a strange (but good!) book so far. I love the setting in Prague and the imagery is wonderful. I am already captivated by Karou’s world.

“In all the world, there was only one place humans could get wishes: Brimstone’s shop. And there was only one currency he accepted. It wasn’t gold, or riddles, or kindness, or any other fairy-tale nonsense, and no, it wasn’t souls either. It was weirder than any of that.”
