If&Then Thursday

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all enjoying your week! Here is another If&Then Thursday 🙂 If you want to participate, just comment with your link and I will link it in my post. Feel free to use any of my graphics for the post.

If&Then Thursdays is a book meme created by Alex@ Young at Heart Books. How do you participate? It’s easy! All you have to do is choose two books that are somewhat related in theme, writing style, genre, etc. Tell us how they are similar and why we would like them! All recommendations should be made in this format:

“If you like Book A, then you might enjoy Book B”

My recommendation for this week:

Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall

At seventeen, Norah has accepted that the four walls of her house delineate her life. She knows that fearing everything from inland tsunamis to odd numbers is irrational, but her mind insists the world outside is too big, too dangerous. So she stays safe inside, watching others’ lives through her windows and social media feed.

But when Luke arrives on her doorstep, he doesn’t see a girl defined by medical terms and mental health. Instead, he sees a girl who is funny, smart, and brave. And Norah likes what he sees.

Their friendship turns deeper, but Norah knows Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can walk beneath the open sky. One who is unafraid of kissing. One who isn’t so screwed up. Can she let him go for his own good—or can Norah learn to see herself through Luke’s eyes?

WHY? If you enjoyed the subject matter of Everything Everything I encourage you to try Under Rose-Tainted Skies. Both narrators are trapped in their home, and both eventually form relationships with sweet boys who help them better understand themselves. Although while Everything was a sweet book, it lacked the realistic feeling Rose-Tainted Skies had. Norah struggled in a way that made me feel intensely uncomfortable. Have you read either of these book? What did you think?

  1. I wasn’t a huge fan of Everything, Everything (I liked the story up until the ending, which kind of killed it for me) but I enjoyed it for the most part! Under Rose-Tainted Skies sounds wonderful. And I’ve read several positive reviews on it, so I’m definitely looking forward to picking it up one day! Great post 😀

    1. Thank you! Under Rose-Tainted Skies is very realistic and doesn’t glorify having a disability/mental illness. Going through it with Norah is very uncomfortable and difficult to read at times but also seemed believable. I ended up really enjoying it!

      1. Realism is always welcome in the depiction of mental illness/disability. I’ve read too many books that don’t go about it the right way, but this one seems like a winner! I’ll definitely be adding it to my TBR 😀
