Review: Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig

Flynn’s girlfriend has disappeared. How can he uncover her secrets without revealing his own?

Flynn’s girlfriend, January, is missing. The cops are asking questions he can’t answer, and her friends are telling stories that don’t add up. All eyes are on Flynn—as January’s boyfriend, he must know something.

But Flynn has a secret of his own. And as he struggles to uncover the truth about January’s disappearance, he must also face the truth about himself.

This is it! Finally a mystery with beautiful character development and a gut-wrenching, page-gripping story-line. I’m in love. This book is AMAZING and has absolutely moved its way on to my favorites shelf. Bravo to Caleb Roehrig for such a wonderful debut novel. I’ve already added his second upcoming book, White Rabbit, to my TBR.

The story opens when Flynn, our narrator, finds out his girlfriend January has gone missing. The police question him about what happened the last time he saw her and Flynn is hesitant to tell the entire story for reasons we find out soon after. While their relationship was far from ideal, Flynn did love January in his own way. They have grown further apart in the past few months- January moved, she has a new politician stepdad, and she goes to a new, ritzy private school. As more truths come to the surface about January, Flynn starts to wonder how well he knew her in the past few months and is determined to find out the most important question of all: What happened to January?

I was expecting a fast-paced, mystery story-line when I picked up this book and I wasn’t disappointed. What I wasn’t expecting was the beautiful character development from our main character, Flynn. Flynn’s “secret” is revealed early on and a lot of the book is dedicated to Flynn coming to terms with who he is and what that means for his relationships in his life. I absolutely adored Flynn. He was a realistic narrator and I quickly became invested in his story and in his determination to find out what happened to January.

We also get to know January through some very clever flashbacks placed throughout the book. January was an eccentric, dramatic and yet likable character. As Flynn delves into the mystery of what happened to her, we see certain memories resurface that give us insight into her life. Her not so great home life, her erratic behavior the past few weeks. We do see that he really cared about her. I loved seeing all of the pieces come together into a thrilling conclusion that I honestly did not see coming.

I don’t want to talk about Flynn’s character development too much because I enjoyed going through everything with Flynn. will say that is was absolutely wonderful and I love everything that happened with him. I wish I could gush more but I don’t want to spoil anything!

Guys, this book was an absolute gem. It has everything- realistic, likable characters, an enthralling mystery story-line and a satisfying conclusion in more ways than one. I have no critiques! I am definitely a Caleb Roehrig fan after this book and I encourage you all to read this book! Let me know what you think 🙂
