The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

21936988

A startling, seductive, deliciously dark debut that will shatter your definition of YA fantasy. Sixteen-year-old Twylla lives in the castle. But although she’s engaged to the prince, no one speaks to her. No one even looks at her. Because Twylla isn’t a member of the court. She’s the executioner. As the goddess-embodied, Twylla kills with a single touch. So each week, she’s taken to the prison and forced to lay her hands on those accused of treason. No one will ever love her. Who could care for a girl with murder in her veins? Even the prince, whose royal blood supposedly makes him immune to her touch, avoids her.But then a new guard arrives, a boy whose playful smile belies his deadly swordsmanship. And unlike the others, he’s able to look past Twylla’s executioner robes and see the girl, not the goddess. Yet a treasonous romance is the least of Twylla’s problems. The queen has a plan to destroy her enemies-a plan that requires an unthinkable sacrifice. Will Twylla do what it takes to protect her kingdom? Or will she abandon her duty in favor of a doomed love?

I’ve been eyeing this series for a while now. It’s not new but for whatever reason seems to be getting more attention in the blogging community lately. Also, isn’t that cover absolutely gorgeous?! It honestly seemed like a generic YA fantasy but I decided to pick it up after all of the positive reviews I’ve been seeing. I’m still in the beginning but I hope I love it!

What did you recently finish reading?

Okay, I took my GRE two weeks ago and since then I have been reading like crazy. I read four books last week! I have no idea how I found the time to do that. Anyway, I also read a lot of great books that I am excited to share with all of you!

Scythe by Neal Shusterman 4★

This book was fascinating. It was a thoughtful exploration into a society where humans have conquered everything, even death itself. Scythes act as futuristic grim reapers, randomly killing or ‘gleaning’ to control population growth. It was dark, intriguing and honestly a wonderful read. I highly recommend!

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli 4★

This book was adorable, although I didn’t love it as much as Simon. I will also say I was slightly disappointed after all the hype this book was getting! It was cute, but not amazingly good in my opinion. It did make me very nostalgic about growing up and falling in love though 🙂

Pivot Point by Kasie West 4★

I was skeptical to read this Kasie West book with a paranormal twist…but I never should have doubted her. It was a little different than her usual but still fluffy and cute as always! After that ending I have to get my hands on the next book.

Bright Side by Kim Holden 4★

Ugh. This book left me an emotional mess. Not quite as much as others I’ve read (I’m looking at you, Colleen Hoover) but still emotional and thoughtful after finishing it. While some aspects of the book had some recycled plot devices- typical gay best friend, hot, dreamy guy at the coffee shop, rude, unfriendly roommate, an annoyingly perfect main character- the overall message was heartfelt. I also really liked the writing and journal format of this book. I definitely recommend!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Honestly, I don’t know! I’m just biding my time until ACOWAR comes out. I decided to go with a quick, cute read next in honor of the movie coming out:

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

18692431

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

I absolutely loved Nicola Yoon’s other book- The Sun is Also a Star so I’m sure I will enjoy this book as well. I unfortunately know the twist…which is why I’ve put off reading it for so long. However most people seem to think this book is very cute so I’m sure I will enjoy it!

What are you all reading this week?

    1. Haha, yes! I guess I spent my entire week reading, it was bliss :). The world in Sin Eater’s Daughter is turning out to be a bit more complex than I anticipated so I am slowly going through the first few chapters but I’m sure it will pick up. If you loved Upside, you will LOVE Simon! I absolutely adored taht book!

Also, do you have a spreadsheet of new releases? Because that is an excellent idea and I need to do it! I cannot wait for ACOWAR. We are almost at 2 weeks!!

  2. The Sin Eater’s Daughter has been on my TBR for a while! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts 🙂 and I wasn’t the biggest fan of Everything Everything because of the plot twist but I’m still excited for the movie!

  3. I LOVE the cover of The Sin Eater’s Daughter as well, but unfortunately the love triangle destroyed the story for me… Hope it will go better for you though. And Everything, Everything is without doubt a cute read, although I prefer The Sun Is Also A Star. I hope you will enjoy your books this week and happy reading! Here’s my WWW.

    1. Oh interesting, you are not a fan of love triangles right? I’ve seen that in some of your reviews before 🙂 hopefully I don’t mind it too much…but they do annoy me! haha. I’m sure Everything will be a cute read. I already know the twist (unfortunately) so at least I won’t be disappointed by the reveal!

      1. I’m not a fan at all haha, but I do tolerate them if they add to the story… I remember that in the case of The Sin Eater’s Daughter the love triangle was particularly annoying and the MC was basically a blubbering mess after the love triangle was introduced. Such a shame, because I loved the first part of the story! The worldbuilding is very interesting.

  4. Can you remind me who the gay best friend was in Bright Side? I’m totally blanking and it’s killing me! I loved that book so much when I read. Its follow up Gus was also very good. If you liked Bright Side, I would highly recommend When it Rains by Lisa DeJong. Has some of the same feeling to it. Happy reading!

    1. Clayton! I ended up really enjoying Bright Side 🙂 I was in kind of a funk for a few days after finishing it haha. I saw the excerpt from Gus as well, I will definitely look into it! I just added When it Rains to my TBR, thanks so much for the recommendation.

  5. I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed Scythe! I’ve been wanting to pick it up because it sounds so interesting. I personally wasn’t that big of a fan of Everything Everything, it was just a bit immature and boring to me.

  6. I’ve just ordered The Upside of Unrequited so now I’m a bit scared it’s not going to live up to expectations / hype. I’ve seen some good reviews but also some “meh” reviews from people who were disappointed. I guess I’ll have to find out for myself, right? 🙂
