September Wrap Up and October TBR

Books I read and my reviews:

This is my first wrap up and TBR post so I am very excited to share it with all of you! While I didn’t get to every book I wanted to read this month, I was very happy with everything I did manage to read. I read 8 books! I was generally pleased with all of them, except for a NetGalley read that seriously took me 6 weeks to get through. I really didn’t want to DNF…but I was very close.

September was also a great month for anticipated releases and I ended up being very satisfied with the sequels I read.  I also read another book on my “5 books I want to finish before the end of the year” list (All the Ugly and Wonderful Things) so I only have three more to go now :). Here are the books I read, all of the titles are linked to my reviews except for The Catalyst:

More Than This– Patrick Ness 5

A Torch Against the Night– Sabaa Tahir 5

Confess– Colleen Hoover 4 ☆

Empire of Storms– Sarah J. Maas 4.5

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things– Bryn Greenwood 4

Labyrinth Lost (NetGalley) – Zoraida Córdova 4☆

Carry On-Rainbow Rowell 5

The Catalyst (NetGalley) – Helena Coggan

I finally finished The Catalyst over the weekend and I ultimately chose not to share a review on my blog. I wanted to finish it because it was a NetGalley read, but I did not have anything positive to say about it. The author is definitely talented but the characters lacked individual voices and the story lost focus for me.

 September Book Haul:

September was a beautiful month for buying books! If you’ve been reading my posts you know I also got a library card so I have also been enjoying the benefits of reading free e-books. I pre-ordered quite a few books and purchased some e-books on my TBR when there were on sale.

Pre-ordered (Hardback):

Empire of Storms– Sarah J. Maas

A Torch Against the Night- Sabaa Tahir

Crooked Kingdom– Leigh Bardugo

The Female of the Species– Mindy McGinnis

Book of the Month Subscription:

All The Ugly And Wonderful Things– Bryn Greenwood

The Couple Next Door– Shari Lapena

Kindle E-books:

Most of these books were purchased on sale, and when the book is only $2-3 I can’t say no!

Cruel Beauty– Rosamund Hodge

Rise of the Sparrows– Sarina Langer

Magonia– Maria Dahvana Headley

A Darker Shade of Magic– V.E. Schwab

All The Bright Places– Jennifer Niven

Invasion of the Tearling (Queen of the Tearling #2)– Erika Johansen

Carry On– Rainbow Rowell

Other books:

9460487

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children– Ransom Riggs

I won this book in a contest hosted by Jill @ Rantandraveaboutbooks to help decide the book of the month for the Hype or Like Friday meme. I will definitely be reading it this month!

October TBR:

As for my TBR in October, I am mostly going to work on books I already own. I never thought I would accumulate so many unread books! If you do a combination of book sales, library books, ARCs you can actually get away with not spending that much money. Although I imagine I still spend much more than the average person…

My October TBR:

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children– Ransom Riggs

The Star-Touched Queen – Roshani Chokshi (Library book)

The Summer That Melted Everything- Tiffany McDaniel (Library book)

Crooked Kingdom – Leigh Bardugo

City of Bones – Cassandra Clare

I actually recently connected with another blogger, ClosetReads, and we are going to do a buddy read of City of Bones! I am very excited because 1. This is my first buddy read and 2. I’ve really been wanting to dive into all of Cassandra Clare’s books to see what all this hype is about.

I’ll start with those books for now and see what happens in October. I want to leave some flexibility for any ARCs that might get approved. While I checked off another book off my “5 Books I Want to Finish Before the End of the Year” post, I still have three to go! I own A Monster Calls and A Darker Shade of Magic so I might get to one of those if I have the time.

Thank you for reading this long post! What do you think of my TBR? Anything you’re excited to read this month? 🙂

  1. What a great list. I am currently reading Crooked Kingdom right now and love it so far. I also really want to read Star Touched Queen because I have heard nothing but good things about it. I also hope to be reading Empire of Storms soon. 🙂

  2. Amazing reading month for you! 😀 I need to pick up More Than This again. I tried to read it, but I just wasn’t into it at the time, so I put it aside. I really want to give it a second chance though. I really enjoyed Confess, but it wasn’t Hoover’s best. I need to read Carry On! I’ve been trying to read that book since it was released and I keep putting it on my monthly TBRs and never reading it, HAHA. I really want to read The Summer that Melted Everything and The Star-Touched Queen. AwesomeTBR!

    1. Thank you! More Than This was really great, but it’s one of those books where you don’t know what’s going on for the entire book 😂 it was my first introduction to Patrick Ness and I definitely want to read more by him. I loved Confess, so if it isn’t her best I guess I have some books to look forward to! And Carry On was soooo great! I was skeptical at first, but I loved it. It seriously made me so happy reading it. Hopefully this month will be a productive reading month as well! There’s so many books I want to read 😊

  3. What a fantastic haul, I loved the books you got, I hope you will love them, especially ADSOM and All The Bright Places, both are so, so good! ❤ I had some issues with Magonia but it was still very, very original to read. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on that one. Happy reading and happy October! 🙂

  4. Looks like you had a great reading month Alex!!! I also read & enjoyed Labyrinth Lost in September. I’m really looking forward to Female Of The Species, possibly getting it this wknd at Bookcon. Netgalley made me DNF a book, I just couldn’t get through (The Wangs Vs. The World). I wanted to LOVE it! but there was a lot of text in Chinese with no translation. My 1st DNF from Netgalley smh. Kindle did have some pretty amazing deals this last month & I was tempted to get a few, only got Cassette Girls since I still need to read Queen Of the Tearling. You’re October TBR looks good! I really should read Miss Peregrine’s, I own the boxset & really would like to have read book 1 at least b4 watching the movie smh. Hope you have a wonderful October 🙂

    1. Thank you Lilly! I’ve been really looking forward to Female of the Species but I also have a lot of anticipated library books that are about to become available. How do I choose! Haha, its just nice having so many books to choose from. I will definitely be reading Miss Peregrine’s this month for both Hype or Like Friday and the movie! Hopefully this will be a good reading month as well 🙂

      1. If you find the answer to that, please let me know lol. I have way too many unread books that I own myself & yet still buy more & Netgalley smh lol. I may just read Miss Peregrines as well cuz I totally forgot that it’s part of Hype Or Like, matter of fact i’m gonna head on over there & see the wkly topics. I’ve had the trilogy on my shelves since last December, it’s about that time they get read lol.

  5. It looks like you had a great reading month for September, and a great buying month as well! Most of the books you got through were highly rated and it’s always great when that happens isn’t it? I’ve heard so many amazing things about Labyrinth Lost I need to get started on it ASAP, I’ve been steadily moving it up my to-read list! I’m also so glad you enjoyed A Torch Against the Night, Empire of Storms and More Than This because they are all favourites of mine as well!
I can’t wait to see what you think of The Star-Touched Queen, another favourite of mine, and City of Bones. Hopefully your October reading month will be as successful as your September one! 😀

    1. Thank you!! So far October is also a successful reading month. Sometimes I feel a little guilty for rating every book so high.. but they’re all just SO good. I really enjoyed Star-Touched Queen and I’m almost through City of Bones which I like, but don’t love. I’m willing to keep reading because I know people love the entire series.

      1. Yeah I know what you mean, but if you enjoy it there’s nothing wrong with rating books high. Just goes to show you thought they were amazing! 😀
I feel like the series gets better and better, at least from what I’ve heard, so maybe that’ll be the case for you as well! 🙂
