Hype or Like Friday: September 9th

Each month they choose a hyped up book to read and discuss on the last Friday of the month. The first three Fridays are dedicated to related discussion questions. This month we are reading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.

 

 

I see Rainbow Rowell’s books everywhere and her books all seem interesting and a little strange. I really enjoyed Eleanor and Park so I am excited to dive into this book.

 

 

 

 

Since September is back to school month, the discussion themes will all be school-centered.

Here is this week’s topic:

” I Love Science: My Favorite Science Fiction Books- This can be anything you want. Science fiction can be anything from time travel to DNA mutations like X-Men. You can go with comic books or novels. Whatever you feel like writing about.”

When I read this topic and thought about the books I wanted to choose, I realized I need to read more science fiction! I’ve read some science fiction that I really enjoy, but its not usually my go-to topic.

Since I usually focus on young adult books, here are some of my favorite YA sci-fi books:

Broken Skies by Theresa Kay

This book was such a pleasant surprise. It is one of the best alien invasion/human and alien love story that I’ve read in a while. It is a promising start to the series.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman

Following the spaceship crash of the Icarus, Lilac and Tarver must survive on a deserted planet. While there is definitely a swoon-worthy romance in this book, Kaufman doesn’t shy away from the dark and disturbing. This book is brilliant.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

This book is told in such a unique format that you have to give it a try. While it took me about 100 pages to get into the story, once I did I flew through the rest of the story. You can read my full review of it here.

Another science fiction book that comes to mind is Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.

I love Margaret Atwood. She writes beautiful, thought-provoking books of all different genres. This story is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows Snowman, who very well may be the last human in the world. If you haven’t read anything from Margaret Atwood, I definitely recommend this book.

Finally, I feel like I can’t talk about science fiction without naming some classic sci-fi stories:

The Time Machine and The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

I read both of these for school but really enjoyed them. Its amazing to see a futuristic, science fiction book imagined from an author in 1895.

 

Since this post really made me think about what I have read and what’s on my TBR, I wanted to end with a few science fiction books that I really want to read.

Pines (Wayward Pines#1) and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

I’ve been wanting to read Wayward Pines for a while and after I saw great reviews for Dark Matter I bumped both of these books higher on my TBR.

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

I’ve seen the movie for this book, but I feel like its a classic sci-fi book that I need to have on my “read” shelf.
